The history of St Valentine's Day was started way back in Roman times. In Ancient Rome, the 14th February was a day to honour the Queen of Roman Gods & Goddesses Juno. Juno was known as the Goddess of women and marriage.
On this day all the young boys and girls in the empire would write out the names of all the girls, and put them in a pot, each young man would have to draw a name of a girl from the pot, and this girl would be the young man’s partner during the festivities, sometimes the partnerships would last longer or lead to marriage
However this was banned by Claudius, as this emperor believed that it would hold men back from going to war, because they would rather be with their lovers or families, this the caused all marriages and engagements to be cancelled, but a priest named Saint Valentine, married these people secretly and as a result, Claudius had him executed on February 14th, whilst awaiting his execution saint valentine fell in love with the jailors blind daughter.
She somehow gained her sight, some say it was a miracle, others say it was St Valentines prayers, in his last note to her he wrote, ‘From Your Valentine’
Some people believe that whilst he was jailed, he was sent letters and flowers from children
St Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14 every year, because St Valentine was executed on this day, and as the patron saint of lovers, lovers worldwide celebrate their love by sending flowers and gifts
